Biography

 

Tony Karacsonyi is world renowned for his spectacular images of wildlife & the underwater world. Living near Ulladulla provides him with plenty of inspiration!

1998 saw Tony awarded with the prestigious "Australian GEOGRAPHIC 'Photographer of the Year'"

Tony has won several international awards including a 'runner up' position in the 'WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR' award, 1996 for an image of a tiny red amphipod called 'Amaryllis. The Natural History Museum kindly flew him to London for the awards and exhibition.

Photography has taken him to some of the world's most pristine and culturally fascinating places such as Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands and the remote Siassi, Trobriand and D'Entrecasteaux Islands off Papua New Guinea.

Others include Vavau in Tonga, Southern Africa, the Maldives and our Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea.

His most recent expeditions have been into Northern India to photograph wild tiger, Borneo to photograph orangutan, remote Heard Island and eastern Antarctica, aboard an Australian GEOGRAPHIC Society expedition. "Our landing on Heard Island was the first since its 'World Heritage Listing' several years ago and I feel privilaged to have set foot on it to photograph its unique wildlife.

  • '97 Highly commended Underwater World ~ 'Red Indian fish'
  • '98 Highly commended Animal behaviour, Mammals ~ 'Seven Surfing Dolphins'

"Although I've been lucky to travel I still enjoy taking pictures near my home on the Australian South Coast and have fond memories of a feature I photographed, about Giant Cuttlefish for Australian GEOGRAPHIC magazine" says Tony.

Tony's aims are to explore more of the globe and document its highly endangered wildlife.
